Chase Stemmons Acadmic Portfolio

Welcome!

·

Over the past semester, I’ve been able to engage in a deeper, more personal approach to writing academically and formulating arguments, thanks to the many different themes covered in ENGL 11000.

I’ve always been a fan of writing, reading, and literary analysis. I think that language has always been able to reach it’s most communicative form in prose, offering an efficient and effective way to communicate ideas in ways other mediums cannot match. Personal expression and subjects offer a potent example of this – composing a piece out of pure language can aid in concisely depicting anecdotes, covering controversial topics, arguing differing points of view and evoking raw emotion all at once.

This digital portfolio will cover my works in the four phases of the course, with brief descriptions of each unit.

The semester has grown my skills in tempering my writing style, and exploring my voice. Regardless of whether it’s review for writers, learning the fundamentals piece by piece will always make light of the areas in which improvement is needed. Building from the personal to the researched and objective, I’ve been able to evaluate my style, introduce more elements of my personality, and inevitably write more in a more confident and compelling manner.

Some of my favorite books express the goal I consistently strive towards: to realize my own unique voice to it’s most developed and authentic state.

House of Leaves – Mark Z. Danielewski
Gravity’s Rainbow – Thomas Pynchon
The Idiot – Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Invisible Man – Ralph Ellison
Pale Fire – Vladimir Nabokov
The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas – Gertrude Stein
